Replacing your vehicle’s starter can be done at home with the right tools and a little mechanical knowledge. Follow these steps to safely replace your starter.
1. Disconnect the Battery: Locate the battery and disconnect the negative (-) terminal to prevent electrical shocks.
2. Locate the Starter: The starter is usually mounted near the bottom of the engine, where it connects to the transmission.
3. Lift the Vehicle (If Needed): If the starter is difficult to access from above, use a jack and jack stands to safely lift the front of the vehicle.
4. Disconnect Electrical Connections: Remove the wiring and electrical connectors from the starter, noting their positions for reinstallation.
5. Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts: Locate and remove the bolts securing the starter to the engine or transmission housing.
6. Remove the Old Starter: Carefully pull out the starter and compare it with the new one to ensure a proper match.
7. Install the New Starter: Position the new starter in place and secure it with the mounting bolts.
Reconnect the electrical wiring to the correct terminals.
8. Reconnect the Battery: Reattach the negative (-) battery terminal securely.
9. Test the Installation: Start the engine to ensure the new starter engages properly and cranks the engine smoothly.
